From the Treatment Table to the Podium: Supporting an Elite Cyclist at the U.S. National Championships

When people think about sports chiropractic, they often picture professional athletes. The reality is that the same evidence-based care used at the highest levels of sport can benefit anyone—from professional cyclists to weekend warriors and high school athletes. At Mui Chiropractic & Sports Medicine in Newton, Massachusetts, that's exactly the approach we bring to every patient.

During the 2026 USA Cycling National Championships, I had the privilege of traveling with CCB Women's Cycling as both the team's sports chiropractor and team photographer, providing on-site sports medicine support throughout the championship week.

By the time Jorja Bond arrived for treatment, she had already put together an incredible championship campaign. Just days earlier, she captured a remarkable second-place finish in the U23 Women's Time Trial, followed by another demanding effort in the U23 Women's Criterium the evening before.

When Jorja presented for evaluation the day before the U23 Women's Road Race, she was experiencing significant pain in both knees. A focused examination found findings consistent with an acute presentation of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), with tenderness along the medial aspect of both knees and at the patellar tendon insertion below the kneecap.

One of the greatest advantages of traveling with an elite cycling team is the ability to evaluate and treat injuries immediately rather than waiting days for care. Her treatment included Graston Technique®, myofascial release, chiropractic adjustments to improve lower-body mechanics, and Kinesio Tape® application to help support both knees before competition.

The next morning, Jorja delivered one of the strongest rides of the championship. She spent much of the U23 Women's Road Race driving the pace off the front, creating the opportunity for teammate Katherine Sarkisov to bridge what had become nearly a three-minute gap and ultimately capture the U23 Women's National Championship. Jorja never stopped fighting, however. After an incredible display of determination throughout the race, she out-sprinted her competitor in the closing meters to earn second place and another trip to the national championship podium, giving CCB Women's Cycling an unforgettable one-two finish.

One of the most rewarding parts of the week was watching everything unfold from two unique perspectives. As the team's chiropractor, I had the opportunity to help prepare athletes for one of the biggest races of their season. As the team's photographer, I was also behind the lens documenting every attack, every decisive move, and every emotional finish. Seeing the race through the camera while understanding everything that happened behind the scenes—from the treatment table to the podium—was an experience I'll never forget.

Experiences like this reinforce what sports chiropractic is truly about. It's not simply treating pain—it's helping athletes perform at their best through timely evaluation, hands-on treatment, rehabilitation, movement optimization, and collaboration with coaches, mechanics, directors, and the rest of the performance team.
